KMT House Hosts A Workshop For Creative Urban Entrepreneurs In October

"Creative interventions toward social impact are effective when designed with meaningful participation of stakeholders," says John Bruce of Parsons School of Design. "This is the way forward."

Urban news platform progrss.com and urbantech innovation space KMT House, are partnering with the U.S. Embassy in Egypt to bring Parsons School of Design professors John Bruce and Mark Randall to Egypt in mid-October for a five-day intensive workshop to explore the role that creative professionals can play when executing projects to make a positive contribution to their communities. The workshop, “Design + Social Impact: A Workshop on Strategies for Creative Intervention,” will be held at KMT House in Maadi between October 14 and October 18. Applications close on September 8th

"Strategy relies on useful insights - new ways of seeing, embodied learning from diverse perspectives, and deep understanding of the motivations surrounding behavior. Creative interventions toward social impact are effective when designed with meaningful participation of stakeholders. This is the way forward.’’ says Bruce, Assistant Professor of Strategic Design at Parsons and senior strategist for Forward Mapworksa strategic consultancy. The professor also co-founded the Brooklyn-based design and architecture firm Super-Interesting!. His clients and projects include: Light Phone, Brooklyn Fashion + Design Accelerator, Red Hook Initiative, Novo Foundation, and U.S. Department of Energy.

Exploring how design thinking can be dedicated to create a greater social impact for the benefit of their communities, the workshop will focus on critical areas for those interested in taking an entrepreneurial or intrapreneurial approach. Over the course of five days, participants will cover areas like: framing the question, creative sessions, activities and ecosystem mapping, identification of leverage points, stakeholders and value proposition, provo/prototyping, and storytelling. Concluding with a public reception, participants will develop the strategic foundation for a design-driven project and leave KMT House with an understanding of the steps needed to make it a reality.

“At KMT House and progrss.com, we're always trying to look at ways in which we can explore and foster the development of progressive functional design that has the power to better and shape the way we live and move in in cities. We look at design in all its’ forms, as a tool for social development and as having the potential to disrupt the way we see and use everyday objects and ideas,” says Mohamed Helmy, founder and CEO of KMT House and progrss.com.
